Italian Rococo Era Painter, 1675-1741 Italian painter. With Sebastiano Ricci and Jacopo Amigoni he was the most important Venetian history painter of the early 18th century. By uniting the High Renaissance style of Paolo Veronese with the Baroque of Pietro da Cortona and Luca Giordano, he created graceful decorations that were particularly successful with the aristocracy of central and northern Europe. William Frederick Wells
A landscape painter in watercolor, Wells was the true founder of the Society of Painters in Watercolors in 1804 and its president in 1806-07. He studied under J. J. Barralet and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1795 to 1804 and at the Watercolor Society to 1813, when he resigned.
